The conversion
Why 1,000 Mbps equals 1 Gbps
Network rates normally use decimal SI prefixes. One gigabit is 1,000 megabits, so the number becomes one-thousandth as large when the unit changes from Mbps to Gbps. The underlying speed does not change.
For 2,500 Mbps, divide 2,500 by 1,000 to get 2.5 Gbps. To reverse the conversion, multiply Gbps by 1,000: 2.5 Gbps becomes 2,500 Mbps.

Practical comparisons

Changing the unit makes it easier to compare an internet plan with the WAN port, switch, Ethernet adapter, or Wi-Fi link that must carry it. The slowest sustained part of that path still sets the usable rate.

Before comparing hardware
Line rate is not the same as usable throughput
The converted Gbps value describes the same nominal bit rate as the Mbps input. It does not add capacity, predict Wi-Fi performance, or guarantee that an application can move payload at that speed.
For an end-to-end transfer, check the internet service, router WAN and LAN ports, switch ports, Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapters, cabling, storage, processor load, and source server. A single slower component can hold the result below the converted line rate.
- A 1 Gbps port cannot deliver more than its own line rate even when the internet plan is faster.
- Wi-Fi link speed is a negotiated radio rate, not a promise of equal application throughput.
- A VPN, busy router, or slow storage device can become the bottleneck before the network link does.
- Use a sustained measurement from the actual device when planning a download or file copy.
Avoid unit errors
Common Mbps-to-Gbps mistakes
The arithmetic is simple, but similar abbreviations can turn a correct number into the wrong expectation. Keep the unit beside every value when comparing plans and equipment.
- Dividing by 100 instead of 1,000 and turning 500 Mbps into an incorrect 5 Gbps.
- Treating Gbps as gigabytes per second; the lowercase b means bits.
- Calling 1,024 Mbps one Gbps even though advertised network rates normally use decimal prefixes.
- Assuming a 1 Gbps internet plan guarantees 1 Gbps over every Wi-Fi device.
- Comparing a port’s line rate with application payload without allowing for overhead and bottlenecks.
